JENNIE is back with yet another smash.
The 30-year-old “Solo” superstar and BLACKPINK member returned on Friday (July 24) with a brand new single, “Less than a Lover,” out now via OddAtelier/Columbia Records.
The track is described in an official release as JENNIE’s “ode to summer, capturing the excitement and lingering emotions of a relationship that exists somewhere between friendship and romance.”
“‘Cause all I need this summer / Is a little bit less than a lover / Need a little bit less than a lover / You get a little bit more than another / Need a little bit less, little less, little less / Need a little bit less than a lover,” Jennie sings on the chorus.

Written by JENNIE, the song explores the space with someone who is more than a friend but “Less than a Lover,” JENNIE embraces the confusion and exhilaration of an undefined connection. Expanding her sonic palette with a softer alternative-pop sound, the track pairs lo-fi guitar textures and vintage electric keyboards, JENNIE‘s vocals and lyricism, naturally expressing the subtle feelings that arise in a relationship that is neither friendship nor love.
In addition to writing the song, JENNIE also came up with the idea for the story in the accompanying music video co-directed with Choeey and co-starring 22-year-old Taiwanese rising model Nah Kai. He also starred in SEVENTEEN sub-unit DxS’s “Blue.” Check out his Instagram!
The dreamy clip was filmed “along the coast of Spain during a summer heat wave,” according to the opening credits.
As the visual unfolds, JENNIE provides voiceovers as she directs the production, telling the tale of a summer situationship.
“So I want a film about a girl. She wants to avoid love, wants to avoid responsibilities. She’s very confused, but also knows what she wants…just to enjoy summer,” JENNIE explains in the opening monologue, as she moves through various scenes with her co-star.
“So final scene: we’re at the beach. It almost feels like a date and you can’t control your emotions. And you just keep wanting more,” she adds towards the finale as the two nearly kiss until she pulls away.
“To be continued,” the music video teases at the very end.
