Emmy Rossum is talking about her new Hulu show Furious and why they refrain from showing graphic abuse scenes despite the series’ overall disturbing concept.
Furious, which is inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow, certainly handles mature themes. The premise of the crime drama series centers on FBI agent (Rossum) hunting a female serial killer (Lola Petticrew).

Emmy said the that because the show was “made mostly by women,” there’s a difference in how the women and victims in the show are treated. She told US Weekly that “nothing is gratuitous” in the eight-episode show.
While she’s been promoting the show, Emmy revealed a shocking detail about how she prepared for Phantom of the Opera.
“There are no flashbacks that are showing the violence against them,” the Shameless alum continued. “But we feel that in every aspect of them. We can see the specific ways that it shows up in their life.”
Emmy continued, “That is more meaningful to see the way that the history of that affects you now than needing to see it.”
Furious, which was created by New Girl and Dying for Sex creator Liz Meriwether, premiered on Monday (July 27) and is already generating a lot of buzz since earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of debut.
The first three episodes dropped on Monday and new episodes will stream weekly on Hulu until the the August 31 finale.
