Shawn Johnson is sharing a health update on her youngest child.
In an Instagram Story posted on Thursday (July 30), the 34-year-old retired Olympic gymnast revealed that her 2-year-old son Barrett “Bear” – whom she shares with husband Andrew East – is recovering after a “definitely needed” visit to an ear, nose and throat surgeon.
“Updates because it’s been a while and I’ve left you all hanging,” Shawn captioned a video on her Story. “First UPDATE Bear had his second set of tubes put in today and his adenoids removed. Surgery went great.”
Bear had an adenoidectomy, which “is surgery to remove your child’s adenoid glands,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. “Your child may need this surgery if their adenoids have become swollen or enlarged because of an infection or allergies. Removing their adenoids can help if your child has breathing problems that keep them up at night or frequent sinus infections.”
However, Shawn noted that Bear‘s reaction to the anesthesia was challenging.
“It was a rough wake up from anesthesia, but we are back home,” Shawn wrote, explaining in the video, “When kids come in out of anesthesia, it’s pretty rough. This was by far the roughest.”
“He’s just kind of our fighter, and always has been,” she continued. “And he really fought that anesthesia.”
Following the surgery, Shawn said she and Andrew have renewed optimism for their toddler as he recovers.
We’ve been home for probably five hours, and all of a sudden it’s like there’s been a switch flipped,” Shawn detailed. “They were kind of worried at the outpatient because he was refusing water, juice, popsicles, everything. They’re like ‘Make sure you call us if that continues.’”
The gold medalist then playfully detailed all the snacks Bear has been “demanding” post-surgery, listing out yogurt, pizza, popsicles, cherries, cantaloupe and avocado .
“He’s a bottomless pit right now,” Shawn joked.
Along with Bear, Shawn and Andrew – who have been married since 2016 – are also parents to daughter Drew Hazel, 6, and son Jett James, 4.
