Taco Bell is being investigated amid the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak that has infected thousands of people throughout the United States.

The Washington Post announced an investigation into the fast food chain by federal and state officials to see if might be linked to the parasitic illness that causes “explosive” diarrhea.

Taco Bell is already removing some ingredients from its menu for the time being, such as lettuce, guacamole, cilantro onion, and pico del gallo, according to some Reddit posts (via People).

“We are currently unable to sell Lettuce, Cilantro Onion, Pico de Gallo, and Guacamole due to a nationwide recall. We apologize for the inconvenience. Any items ordered that normally come with these items WILL NOT contain them,” the reported signs said.

The company also issued a statement to People amid concerns.

“The health and safety of our guests is our top priority,” they said regarding the removal of select ingredients. “Public health officials have not confirmed a link to Taco Bell or any specific ingredient, supplier, restaurant or retailer.”

“While authorities continue their broader review, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed limited ingredients at select restaurants as a precautionary measure. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and follow the guidance of public health authorities,” they said.

Outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have already happened in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Connecticut. The agency says they are aware of over 5,100 cases that still require confirmation, with at least 1,645 already confirmed.
