The Hawk has landed, and not everyone is thrilled about the show.

The Will Ferrell-fronted comedy series just premiered on Netflix today (Thursday, July 16).

Here’s the synopsis: “Lonnie Hawkins, (Ferrell) 2004’s number one golfer, struggles on the back nine of his career to recapture his magic. His body says retire, but his heart says he’s not done yet. His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf’s new golden boy, know he’s through. But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf “

The cast includes Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby, and the show is produced by the PGA Tour.

But what do critics have to say so far about the comedy? Find out what people are saying about the series.

The Hawk currently has a 29% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Consequence says: “The Hawk isn’t crying out for a second season, but the first one was a loose and fun flight.”

RogerEbert.com says: “Virtually everything about The Hawk reminds us of better golf movies and TV series.”

The Daily Telegraph writes: ‘Firstly, The Hawk is funny; at times very funny, which is always the first salvation of a hackneyed storyline.”

The Guardian gave it 2 out of 5, writing: “One problem is that the show isn’t actually poking fun at anything in particular—not even golf itself—which means it lacks the specificity or sharpness even stupid comedy requires.”

Variety says: “The Hawk mostly floats along, missing both the bite of satire and the driving force of narrative momentum.”

The Daily Beast says: “Twenty years ago, The Hawk would have been a 90-minute theatrical comedy. Today, it’s the latest feature film idea to be overextended to the point of mirthlessness.”

The Times says: ‘Look, it’s a platinum-blond Will Ferrell in a golf visor — no one’s going to expect subtlety or sophistication. It’s extremely daft summer season viewing.”

The New York Post adds: “It’s a story that might have made for an amusing yet forgettable five-minute Saturday Night Live sketch. It’s tedious, as a five-hour series.”

AV Club gave it a B, writing: “Like that shot Lonnie takes to get out of the woods, The Hawk is a bold move. But unlike that little miracle, the show can’t quite hit its target.”

The Wall Street Journal adds: “The series simply doesn’t know when to be witty and when to be vulgar, and it goes over that line far too many times to win a viewer’s respect.”

Vulture says: “Instead it’s just a show about an unpleasant golfer who finds himself more funny than anyone else does, and whose fondness for puka-shell necklaces and ‘Thong Song’ can’t fill in all the cracks where his humanity should be.”

IndieWire gave it a D+, writing: “Unlike past Ferrell characters, The Hawk isn’t unique enough to earn laughs just by being the odd man out, unless you think ‘The Hawk’ is a unique nickname for a guy with the last name Hawkins.”

THR concludes: “Flat and disposable throughout.”
