Aubrey Plaza is reflecting on the time she almost married Michael Cera as a joke.
The 41-year-old Parks & Recreation star visited the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett for their latest episode, published on Monday (April 20), and talked about her relationship with the 37-year-old Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star.
She says they had driven across the country together while “eating a bag of edibles” and planned to go to Vegas and “get married and then get divorced right away.”

She continued, “So we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever because we thought that would be a really good bit.”
But Aubrey says it was a combination of them being “too high and paranoid,” plus Michael being quite famous at the time—during the height of his Superbad fame and movies like Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist—so they chose not to.
“He was so recognizable,” Aubrey said. “I feel like we got in line at the county office or something and everyone started running, and we ran.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down. Yeah, we bailed,” she added.
She says they’re still very good friends today.
Aubrey and Michael were in an 18-month relationship during their time working on Scott Pilgrim.
Michael previously shared the story of their almost-marriage while talking to Rolling Stone in 2023, saying they “almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married.”
