A scary situation has unfolded at one of the Broadway theaters in New York City’s Times Square.
The Eugene O’Neill Theatre, currently home to the smash hit The Book of Mormon, caught fire on Monday (May 4).
The fire broke out in an electrical room on an upper floor, and has caused “substantial damage,” with the building out of commission at this time.
Luckily, the building was safely evacuated, but one firefighter was apparently injured.
“The NYFD is at the site of the fire now and are handling matters at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. Everyone has been safely removed from the theater. We will keep all parties abreast of this developing situation,” a production spokesperson said (via THR).
It’s unclear how many productions of the show will be canceled. The show does not have a planned performance tonight, but was supposed to have 8 shows this week, beginning tomorrow (May 5).
The fire was classified as a three-alarm fire, which means it was a “significant fire.” It is said that 60 FDNY units are on the scene.
Stay tuned as we learn more.
