Brenda Fricker has sadly passed away.
The Oscar-winning actress, who played the beloved “pigeon lady” in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81.
In a statement to Hello! on Friday morning (July 17), Brenda‘s agent Phil Belfield said she passed away after a “period of ill health.”
“It is with much sadness that I share the news that beloved actress Brenda Fricker passed away last night peacefully after a period of ill health, at the age of 81,” Belfield shared. “Dublin born and bred, Brenda Fricker undoubtedly deserves the noun legend…”
He added, “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her. I was honoured to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”
Brenda made history in 1990 when she became the first Irish actress to win an Oscar. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in My Left Foot, in which she played Daniel Day-Lewis‘ mother.
Throughout her six-decade career, Brenda appeared in more than 30 film and television productions, including the 1990 movie The Field, 1993’s So I Married an Axe Murderer, and 1994’s Angels in the Outfield. Her final acting role was in 2024’s The Swallow.
Our thoughts are with Brenda Fricker‘s loved ones during this difficult time. RIP.
