A third animated Moana movie is reportedly in the works!
Star and executive producer Dwayne Johnson, who plays demigod Maui in every movie, revealed the news this week while promoting the upcoming live-action adaptation.
“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes,” he said at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, via Variety. “But first, live-action Moana, we’ll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers … they will pen Moana 3.”
Jared Bush has written every Moana movie so far, and Dana joined him on the second film and the live-action adaptation. He has also written other hit Disney movies like Zootopia 1 and 2, as well as Encanto!
The first Moana film came out in 2016 and earned $680 million at the global box office. Moana 2 was released in 2024, and after setting a record of $225 million for a Thanksgiving weekend box office, became a four-quadrant hit with $1.059 billion in worldwide sales!
The live-action adaptation is set to hit theaters NEXT Friday, July 10th.
