The first reviews are in for the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle.

Here’s the synopsis for the Prime Video series, executive produced by original star Reese Witherspoon: “Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”

The cast for the series, which launches on the streaming service on Wednesday (July 1), includes Lexi Minetree, June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker.

Critics have begun weighing in on the show. Find out what they’re saying so far…

Elle currently has a 50% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Daily Beast says: “Both crushingly derivative and makes no sense in terms of the franchise’s timeline.”

TheWrap notes: “Legally Blonde was fun, fresh and brilliantly paced, but Elle is dour, boring and tedious.”

Collider gave it 5 out of 10, writing: “Perhaps with a second season coming, the show might course-correct. However, as a prequel, don’t expect something new: Elle trades almost exclusively in nostalgia, and that’s just a shame.”

TVLine says: “In the end, we’re left with an uninspired piece of IP nostalgia bait that is mostly harmless — but pretty forgettable, too.”

IndieWire gave it a D+, writing: “A Legally Blonde series that doesn’t make sense as a prequel is one thing. But a Legally Blonde series that doesn’t take itself seriously as a comedy or as a source of inspiration? I object!”

Radio Times gave it 2 out of 5, writing: “This was a movie spin-off full of potential but TV this bland should be illegal.”

NME gave it 4 out of 5, writing: “In Elle’s world, anybody can be won over with the power of optimism, a wisecrack and a shared love of Chanel. Simpler times? Certainly. There are no hotshot lawyers here, but it’s still an arresting watch.”

Metro gave it 3 out of 5, writing: “After watching the series I felt proud of how far she had come and I enjoyed watching her clearly grow in confidence – it’s one of the show’s aspects that really worked.”

Screen Rant gave it 7 out of 10, writing: “Ultimately, those who can get past the pilot and the canon problems will be rewarded with a lighthearted, bingeable series.”

The New York Post says: “It’s fun, energetic and hits all the right notes.”
