Evan Rachel Wood is speaking out for the “final” time about being left out of Practical Magic 2.
The actress played Kylie Owens in the original 1998 movie, the daughter of Sandra Bullock‘s character Sally Owens. Both her and actress Alexandra Artrip, who played her younger sister Antonia, were not invited back for the sequel.
Earlier this week, Evan was asked about not being asked back for the sequel and her role being taken over by Joey King.
“I read the book, and it seems like they’re not following the book,” she told ET. “I think, in the book, it would have made sense to bring me back. I think in the way they’re approaching it, the way they’re doing it, it didn’t make sense. We bonded with that cast so much as children. And so, to miss out on the opportunity to look at that cast and look at that house as an adult and see the history in our eyes is something that can’t be faked.”
“I’m sad that that doesn’t get to exist, especially for the fans,” she continued. “But I wish them all the best and obviously wish Joey King the best. And I hope she had a great time and I still have really fond memories of being in the original.”
In a statement posted to her Instagram Stories on Thursday (July 30), Evan clarified what she previously said.
“Last thing I’ll say to clarify; I mentioned that if Practical Magic 2 had followed the book it would have made sense to bring me back. The reason being, in the book, the oldest daughter (my character) is closer to 25, and pregnant. It is the youngest daughter who goes in search of a way to end the curse. It’s a mystery how the oldest daughter is with child, but has evaded the curse, until it is revealed that she doesn’t fall in love with men, she falls in love with women,” Evan said.
She continued, “In the new film, they removed the pregnancy and queerness from my character, made her younger, and sent her in search of a way to break the curse, instead of her younger sister. That is why, because of the changes, and the switching of the daughters narratives, it didn’t work to bring me back for the film.”
Evan concluded, “I am really excited for a new generation to discover these films, and also the beautiful books by Alice Hoffman. I have sent Joey King my love and am cheering her on. I hope they all had a magical and fun time bringing it to life. The Owens sisters are truly special.”
