Is Ariana Grande singing about her ex-boyfriend Ethan Slater on the new song “Freak“? There seem to be some connections that point to that.
This is track seven on Ari‘s brand new album Petal, which is now streaming wherever you listen to music.
Ariana is referencing the scrutiny that she faces when she’s in relationships and seems to be fantasizing about what it would be like to not be a pop star.
Ariana begins the song, “Baby, will you come with me nowhere / Before they shoot me down? / When I am flying way too over / Hold me lower.”
She is pointing out how people are trying to tear her down with criticism and she needs someone to ground her during this time.
In the pre-chorus she sings, “Someday, all the seeds will open / All of the life I’ve been denied of / Will bloom all around, unfrozen / How will it feel? How will it feel?”
Ariana is dreaming of a life when she doesn’t have to deal with people tearing her apart for her actions and her relationships.
You might remember that when Ariana started dating Ethan, she was fresh out of her relationship with ex-husband Dalton Gomez. Ethan was also just out of his marriage and they received a lot of backlash for entering their relationship at the time.
Ariana just dropped 12 songs on her new album Petal, including the title track “Petal” and the lead single “Hate That I Made You Love Me.”
