Juliet Mills and Maxwell Caulfield have proved that couple with a large age gap can make it work in Hollywood.
With an 18-year age difference, the Hollywood icons have now been married for 46 years and they’re opening up about why age was never an issue for them.
Maxwell, 66, and Juliet, 84, started dating in 1980 after meeting each other while starring in a stage production of The Elephant Man. At the time, he was 21 and she was 39. They got married later that year and have been together ever since!
The couple spoke out in the new episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, in which they said their ages didn’t matter to them.
“It didn’t occur to me and Juliet maintains to this day it didn’t really occur to her, either,” Maxwell said about their ages.
“She had such a youthful quality — always has, always will do — it’s presumptuous of me to even think that I was going to, you know, hook up with her,” he continued. “That wasn’t really where it was — it just, it happened so fast. It caught us both off guard, needless to say.”
Juliet added, “We didn’t think about it. We didn’t talk about it, either. It was just two people who just communicated on such a high level or in different ways.”
“We had so much in common: of course, we were both English, to start with, we’re both actors, and we just had a communication instantly. It was like saying ‘Hello, where have you just been, I know you,’ and I just believe in reincarnation, I do believe in past lives,” she said. “I believe I knew you in some relationship in another life; that I believe.”
Maxwell is best known for starring in Grease 2 and for his memorable role in Empire Records, as well as the TV show Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys.
Juliet is an Emmy-winning and Tony-nominated actress who might be most recognizable to younger audiences for her work as Tabitha Lenox on the soap opera series Passions. She also made frequent appearances on The Love Boat.
