John Oliver is trading late-night for daytime!
The 49-year-old Last Week Tonight host revealed during Sunday night’s (June 28) episode that he has been cast in not one, but two soap operas, with both appearances airing this summer.
He first revealed a three-episode arc on General Hospital, and later revealed a week-long appearance on Days of Our Lives!
This news comes months after he previously expressed interest in making an appearance on a soap.
“To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast, it will make your head spin,” he said back in March, via THR.
John will make his debut on General Hospital on Thursday (July 2), with his next two episodes airing Friday (July 3) and Monday (July 6).
“When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second,” General Hospital EP Frank Valentini shared in a statement. “He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths within Port Charles.””
In his own statement, John shared, “General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”
On Last Week Tonight, he said he was “filled with scorching-hot jealousy” over ESPN’s Stephen A Smith appearing on General Hospital.
“To be clear: soap opera-acting is not my Plan B,” he explained on Sunday (June 28). “I simply offered my hypothetical acting abilities to any soap that would meet my terms, which were: I wanted to play a character with a ridiculous name, I wanted a juicy storyline like murder or slapping and I wanted a dramatic close-up of my face. Well, I’m thrilled to announce that I have an update.”
“I am happy to say that I’ve already taped a week of episodes on Days of Our Lives, which is clearly a huge honor. It’s been home to some of the most renowned soap opera actors, like Deidre Hall, Susan Seaforth Hayes and John Aniston,” he added. “It’s also featured guest appearances from legends like Dick Van Dyke, Betty White and now me.”
John‘s appearance on Days of Our Lives is scheduled to air on August 11, 12 and 14, according to Variety.
