Heat 2 is officially happening!

Nearly a year after it was first announced that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to star in the long awaited sequel to the 1995 film, he has officially signed on for the movie and will be starring alongside Christian Bale, The Wrap reports.

The original movie starred Al Pacino as Los Angeles cop Vincent Hanna who is obsessed with tracking down career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) before his last heist.

In Heat 2, Christian will be taking over as Vincent Hanna while Leo will be playing Chris Shiherlis, who was originally played by Val Kilmer.

Here’s a synopsis: “Acting as both a prequel and a sequel, the sprawling Heat 2 story is set in several timelines. One follows a younger McCauley and his crew pulling off daring heists and living the high life. Another tells of what happened to Shihirlis, the lovelorn thief played by Kilmer in the 1995 movie, in the aftermath of the first movie’s climactic robbery, and his multi-year quest to reunite with his former girlfriend (who was played by Ashley Judd in the original). One part of the book is set in a lawless South American drug zone. And there is also an overarching bad guy more brutal than anything seen in the first movie, a murderer and rapist named Otis Wardell.”

It is also being reported that Adam Driver is in negotiations to play Wardell in the new movie while Stephen Graham is talks to take over De Niro‘s role as McCauley. The search is still underway for an actress to play Judd‘s role of Sharlene.

Michael Mann, who wrote and directed the 1995 movie, will be returning to write and direct the sequel, which originated as a novel he wrote with Meg Gardiner, released in 2022.

Released through Amazon MGM Studios, Heat 2 is scheduled to begin filming in November.
