Matthew Lillard has a theory that people don’t actually like him, they’re just feeling nostalgic.

The 56-year-old actor visited the Phase Hero podcast recently and said that he thinks there is a “weird nostalgia thing” happening at the moment in Hollywood and “people are longing for ye olde times.”

Thanks to his starring roles in movies like Scream, Scooby-Doo, and other early 2000s hits, Matthew says that the nostalgia is why he’s “having this moment.”

“I think that’s one of the reasons I’m having this moment to be honest, is because I was identified in that moment, so people are hiring me again,” he explained.

Matthew joked, “I think that’s why I’m working. I don’t think anyone really likes me. They just miss the old times.”

He then gave a version of how he would pitch himself for a role.

“Who should we get? Who’s old and relatively warm and fuzzy feeling?” he considered. “Let’s get Matthew Lillard. Talented? No. But do we like him? Yes.”

His recently roles include the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, The Life of Chuck, Scream 7, Daredevil: Born Again, and Cross. He’ll also star in Mike Flanagan‘s Carrie series on Amazon.

Earlier this year, Matthew reacted to Quentin Tarantino dissing him.
