Meryl Streep originally turned down The Devil Wears Prada!

The 76-year-old actress revealed in a new interview that she almost didn’t play the iconic role of Miranda Priestly in the 2006 hit film while discussing the sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, hitting theaters this weekend.

“I read the script — the script was great. They called me up, and they made an offer, and I said, ‘No. I’m not going to do it,’” she admitted during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.

Meryl Streep says she initially said no to the film

When asked why, Meryl said: “I knew it was going to be a hit and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask, and they went right away and said, ‘Sure.’”

She says she was even ready to retire at the time

She added that “it took [her] this long to understand that I could do that! “I was sure of it. I was sure it would be a hit. And they needed me, I felt.”

“And I wanted it, but if they didn’t want to do that, I was OK. Because I’m old — I’m 56, I was ready to retire,” Meryl added.

The film would go on to make $125 million domestically, and over $326 million worldwide. Watch her explanation above.
