She sat down for the interview with The New York Times Magazine after being chosen as one of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters.
“I’m a massive sombr fan, of his songwriting. And his lyrics are so intensely confessional. ‘I don’t want another man’s child to have the eyes of the girl I can’t forget.’ Are you kidding me?” Taylor said.
She continued, “Having a male artist say stuff like that is really good for the cause of women to be able to say stuff. If there’s any way we can make confessional songwriting a little bit more of something that isn’t, like, people take that as like you were being messy. You have to be fair to everyone then.”
It sounds like Taylor is saying that when male artists are open and personal in their music, it helps normalize confessional songwriting and highlights the need for women to be judged by the same standards rather than criticized as “messy.”
In the same interview, Taylor revealed how she really feels about fans decoding her songs.
