The Odyssey is massive at the box office already.
The Christopher Nolan-directed epic pulled in approximately $124.5 million at the domestic box office – and a $264 million overall global haul – in its debut weekend in theaters, via TheWrap.
That’s going to put it about 46% above the $180 million global launch tally of his 2023 movie Oppenheimer, which nearly brought in a billion dollars by the end of its theatrical run.
The movie is also going over well with both audiences and critics: it’s currently sitting at 95% Fresh among critics, with a 97% audience score among thousands of reviews. It also has an A rating on CinemaScore.
It’s already surpassed one record, becoming the highest domestic opening for an R-rated movie outside of the Deadpool movies, beating 2017’s It, and for a Christopher Nolan movie outside of the Dark Knight movies, all rated PG-13, TheWrap notes.
It is now the director’s highest opening weekend ever in 48 countries. 53% of the tickets were for digital Imax, Dolby, 35mm, 70mm and other premium formats.
