How can you find the nearest available showing?

The most reliable starting point is the movie’s official showtime finder. Enter a ZIP code or location, select IMAX 70mm as the format and then follow the listing to the theater’s own ticketing page.

If the closest primetime showing is sold out, check the venue directly for early-morning, late-night, and weekday screenings. Some high-demand locations have added unusual showtimes, and additional seats can appear when orders are canceled.

How long is The Odyssey?

The Odyssey has an official runtime of 172 minutes, or 2 hours and 52 minutes. It is lightly shorter than Nolan‘s three-hour Oppenheimer, but is still his second-longest movie.

The listed runtime does not include trailers or theater advertisements. Because special-format engagements sometimes run fewer trailers, the actual end time can vary.

What is the difference between IMAX 70mm, Digital IMAX, and Regular 70mm?

The labels can be confusing because IMAX 70mm and conventional 70mm are not the same presentation.

IMAX 70mm film uses a 15-perforation frame that runs horizontally through the projector. At compatable theaters The Odyssey is presented in IMAX’s expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, allowing the image to fill more of the screen. Universal says every frame of the movie was shot with IMAX film camera.

Standard 70mm film, sometimes identified as 5/70, runs vertically through the projector and generally presents the movie at a wider 2.20:1 ratio. It remains a true film presentation, but it does not provide the full IMAX 70mm image.

Digital IMAX uses digital projection rather than a physical film print. Some dual-laser IMAX locations can display the expanded 1.43:1 image, while many other digital IMAX screens use a 1.90:1 ratio.

The movie’s official format comparison lets viewers see how the framing changes between presentations, with the site describing IMAX 70mm as the largest and highest-resolution format available.

What is the best alternative if there is no IMAX 70mm theater nearby?

If you can’t see the movie in IMAX 70mm, there are still several premium choices available. A dual-laser IMAX theater capable of presenting the 1.43:1 expanded ratio is the closest digital alternative to the full-frame IMAX 70mm composition. A standard 70mm film engagement is another strong option for viewers who prefer analog projection, although the framing is wider and will not reveal the same amount of image at the top and bottom.

Other IMAX laser, Dolby Cinema and premium large-format screenings can still provide brighter projection, large screens, and/or upgraded sound. The exact experience depends on the equipment at each auditorium.

When choosing a showing, the following order should be considered:

1. IMAX 70mm Film or IMAX 15/70
2. IMAX with Laser at 1.43:1
3. Standard 70mm Film
4. Other IMAX with Laser or premium large format

Why are there so few IMAX 70mm showings?

It’s primarily due to an equipment issue. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond explained that new IMAX film projectors have not been manufactured in decades. Existing machines must be restored and retrofitted before theaters can use them. The company would like to meet more of the audience demand, but it cannot quickly convert thousands of digital IMAX auditoriums into film-projection locations.

The prints themselves also present a logistical challenge as The Odyssey is a massive movie with a large physical reel that requires specialized equipment and handling.

Are more IMAX 70mm showtimes being added? How long will The Odyssey stay in IMAX 70mm theaters?

Yes, individual venues have added showtimes in response to demand, including very early and very late screenings.

IMAX and Universal have not announced one worldwide final date for the IMAX 70mm engagement. The run will vary by location and may be extended where demand remains strong.

Some theaters currently show tickets several weeks into the release, but future listings are not a guarantee.

What else to be aware of before seeing The Odyssey

The Odyssey is rated R for violence and some language. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron among the ensemble cast.

The story follows Odysseus on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan filmed the production across multiple countries and used IMAX film cameras for the entire feature, a first for a full-length movie.
